7 Things to Experience in Marrakech

The exotic and mystical city of Marrakech is full of life and drama – it is a place where you will quickly lose your sense of direction. That’s OK though, you won’t need it here. This famous Moroccan city, located close to the Atlas, has a lot to offer from beautiful historical palaces to tasty street food. With so much to explore, what should one see and do in Marrakech? Marrakechin mystinen ja eksoottinen kaupunki pursuaa elämää ja draamaa. Paikalle saapunut matkailija huomaa nopeasti menettäneensä suuntavaistonsa, mutta se ei haittaa, sillä Marrakechin on tarkoituskin olla hämmentävä. #1 Stay in a traditional Riad

If you want to stay somewhere traditional, you should book a room from a Riad. A typical riad is known to have a small central courtyard, almost like a secret garden, as well as a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy your breakfast. Most riads are small and intimate in comparison to hotels, and each room is decorated in a unique, yet traditional Moroccan way. The thick solid walls of a riad provide you a feeling of safety and comfort while being hidden from the chaos of the streets of Marrakech.

Unohda tavanomainen hotellimajoitus ja valitse sen sijaan perinteinen marokkolainen riad. Tyypillisessä riadissa on sisäpiha sekä upeilla näkymillä varustettu kattoterassi. Eksoottisesti sisustetut huoneet tarjoavat rauhaa ja turvaa kaupungin vilskeeltä. Huonemäärältään riad-majatalot ovat pieniä, taaten intimiin ja kotoisan tunnelman. Marrakechin sokkeloisille kujille saattaa näkyä vain ovi, mutta sen takaa aukeaa upea vierashuoneiden ympäröimä pikkuparatiisi. Myös hinta-laatusuhde on erinomainen!

#2 Be entertained at the grand square of Djemaa el-Fna

The action-packed main square of Jemaa El Fna is worth a visit. You will notice that everywhere you look, you can find drama. Snake charmers play their flutes to hissing cobras, while henna tattoo artists chase their scared “potential customers”. The real show at the UNESCO world heritage site doesn’t start until after sunset – this is when the locals arrive to be entertained by storytellers and musicians. When entering the square, make sure you have some coins with you – it is polite to tip the street artists, and they will come after you if you don’t!

#2 Nauti Djemaa El-Fnan esityksistä

Djemaa El-Fnan aukio on Marrakechin keskeisin paikka. Afrikan tunnetuin aukio tarjoaa miljöön, joka voisi (melkein) olla Tuhannen ja Yhden Yön Tarinoista. Djemaa El-Fna tuli tunnetuksi ympäri Afrikan saapuneista esiintyjistä ja poppamiehistä, joiden ansioista aukiosta tehtiin UNESCOn maailmanperintökohdekin. Vielä tänäänkin käärmeenlumoajat esiintyvät aukiolla kobrineen. Todellinen meno ja vilske alkaa kuitenkin vasta auringonlaskun aikaan, sillä tällöin paikalliset saapuvat aukiolle kuuntelemaan tarinankertojia ja musiikkiesityksiä. Aukiolle kannattaa varata mukaan kolikoita, sillä ”taiteilijoiden” kynsiin tulee jouduttua turhankin helposti. Vaikka Djemaa El-Fnan tuhatvuotinen taika ja autenttisuus alkaa hiipua, on aukiolla vieraileminen silti ikimuistoinen elämys.

#3 Spend your dirhams at the souks

The colourful and vibrant souks of Marrakech are right in the middle of the medina’s (old town’s) narrow alleys, which are packed with people. Shopping here can be quite overwhelming, and it’s easy to get lost, but with a positive mindset you can actually enjoy the atmosphere. There is nothing that isn’t sold at the souks – spices, leather bags, clothes, baskets, shawls, carpets, shoes, you name it! Just remember to bargain if you decide to buy something. If the deal is good, you might be offered a cup of fresh mint tea.

#3 Tuhlaa dirhamisi soukeissa

Marrakechin Medinan mutkittelvilla kujilla sijaitsevat souk-markkinakojut tarjoavat loistavia ostosmahdollisuuksia mausteista ja astioista nahkatuotteisiin, mattoihin, huiveihin ja jopa huonekaluihin. Jo pelkästään erilaiset tuoksut ja upea eksoottinen väriloisto ovat syy piipahtaa Marrakechin hämmentävissä soukeissa. Ostoksille lähtevän matkailijan kannattaa suunnata soukeille kärsivällisin mielin, sillä hyvät kaupat vaativat aikaa ja tinkimistaitoja. Onnistuneiden kauppojen päätteeksi saatat saada kutsun kojunpitäjän takahuoneeseen juomaan teetä.

#4 Explore the history of Marrakech

After Djemaa El-Fna the most famous attractions of Marrakech are the Bahia and El Badii palaces with amazing gardens. While admiring the decorations you will see how the Sultans used to live with their several wives. The small courtyards of the Medersa (Islamic school) of Ben Youssef are also worth visiting. Marrakech also has some lovely museums hidden in the alleys of the medina, ready to tell you more about the city’s colourful history.

#4 Tutustu kaupungin historiaan

Marrakech tarjoaa muutakin kuin vilkkaita toriaukioita ja hauskoja tinkimistuokioita. Kaupungissa sijaitsee upeita historiallisia palatseja, puutarhoja ja museoita. Vierailemisen arvoisia ovat ainakin ihastuttava Bahia-palatsi, El Badiin palatsin sisäpiha raunioineen, ja Ben Yussef Merdersan historiallinen islamistilainen koulu. Nähtävyyksistä saa eniten irti varhain aamulla tai hieman myöhemmin iltapäivällä, kun pahimmat turistimassat eivät aiheuta tungosta.

#5  Unwind in Jardin Majorelle

If you want a little rest from the chaos of the city, head to the Jardin Majorelle. Known for its use of cobalt blue paint and tranquil ponds, it’s a refreshing break from the hussle of the streets. Quiet little paths wind through exotic trees and plants, and it is easy to see why Yves Saint Laurent once found the gardens as a source of inspiration.

#5 Rentoudu Jardin Majorellen puutarhassa

Jardin Majorellen kuuluisa puutarha tarjoaa rauhaa Marrakechin katujen vilinältä ja pölyltä. Puutarha sijaitsee vanhan kaupungin muurien ulkopuolella. Värikäs ja seesteinen pikkuparatiisi lampineen on toiminut aikoinaan mm. Yves Saint Laurentin inspiraation lähteenä.

#6 Get scrubbed in a local Hammam

If you want to experience something truly different, you should consider bathing in a Moroccan Hammam. Buy some black soap and a scrubbing cloth before entering the hot steam room, where you will get scrubbed from head to toe. The odd experience of standing naked in front of the locals while being washed by someone is not necessarily relaxing, but you will definitely be squeaky clean and ready to share a fun story about your experience with friends back home.

#6 Peseydy paikallisessa Hammamissa

Mikäli haluat unohtumattoman marokkolaisen elämyksen, suosittelen peseytymistä paikallisessa hammamissa. Pakkaa mukaasi pyyhe, pesukinnas ja torilla myytävää mustaa saippuaa. Hammamissa sinua odottaa lämmin, höyryinen huone, jossa selänpesijä kuuraa sinut puhtaaksi varpaanvälejä myöten. Pientä tippiä vastaan saatat saada myös hieronnan ja selännaksautuksen. Perinteinen hammam ei ole mikään luksuskylpylä, joten varaudu siihen, että selkääsi vasten hierottava pesukinnas tuntuu hiekkapaperilta.

#7 Try street food

Every evening a feast starts in the Djemaa el-Fna square. Join a queue to be served tasty street food from grills and steaming cauldrons. I recommend the spicy olives for starters, followed by sizzling aubergine, and chicken tagine, yum! Sometimes you might also get fresh mint tea for free. The atmosphere at the street kitchens is amazing – you need to experience it to understand it!

#7 Kokeile katuruokaa

Joka ilta Djemaa El-Fnan torille pystytetään lukuisia ruokakojuja, joista leijailee herkullisen katuruuan tuoksu. Tunnelma on parhaimmillaan juuri auringonlaskun jälkeen, kun paikalliset saapuvat herkkuttelemaan katuesiintyjien soittimien säestäessä iltaa taustalla. Nuoret katuruokaloiden sisäänheittäjät suorastaan kilpailevat huomiostasi, mutta herkullinen ateria on täysin häsläyksen arvoista. Katuruokapaikassa illallistaminen on hauskaa, edullista ja tunnelmallista.

“A blind date with Morocco.” That’s what we thought when placing our suitcase on the belt at Schiphol airport. My boyfriend and I booked the flights on a Thursday night, and on Sunday we already arrived in Marrakech, one of the largest cities of Morocco. Only a few days later we found ourselves sleeping in a tent in the Sahara desert. That’s how fast things can happen!

En tiennyt Marokosta paljoa sinne matkustaessani. Lentoja varatessani tiesin vain, että tulisimme parin päivän kuluttua saapumaan mystiseksi kuvailtuun Marrakechiin. Tasan viikkoa myöhemmin matkustimme jo kameleilla Saharan aavikolla sijaitsevaan telttaleiriin, jossa vietimme yön leiritulen ääressä kirkkaan tähtitaivaan alla.Niin nopeasti matkailuun liittyvät unelmat voivat käydä toteen!

Surprisingly, in a week you can see and experience quite a lot in Morocco. We spent the first two days exploring the narrow and dusty streets of Marrakech. You can find snake charmers, small bazars stacked with spices, and amazing palaces hidden behind the red walls of the medina (old town) of Marrakech. The city is lively and popular among tourists, but there is still something very mystical about that place. I will definitely share more stories about Marrakech in a separate blog post.

Viikossa kerkesimme nähdä ja kokea yllättävän paljon asioita. Vietimme ensimmäiset pari päivää Marrakechin mystiseen medinaan, eli vanhaan kaupunkiin tutustuen. Kaupungin itämaisesta tunnelmasta, kapeista kujista, Djemaa el-Fnan vilkkaasta toriaukiosta, ja punaisien seinien taakse kätkeytyvistä palatseista riittää tarinoita jaettavaksi.

One morning we woke up before sunrise and started a three-day road trip which took us to the Atlas mountains, the old village of Aït Benhaddou (where Game of Thrones, the Gladiator and Babel have been filmed), and the Dades valley, where we spent a night at a dangerously windy spot in a gorge. The next day we passed many remote Berber villages, where life is very different to what you see in the cities of Morocco. I was also fascinated by the changing views – from snowy mountains to emptiness. We traveled all the way to the Sahara desert, left the van behind, and arrived to our camp by camel. Spending a night in the Sahara was an experience I will certainly never forget.

Matkamme kolmantena aamuna heräsimme rukouskutsun kajahtaessa ilmoille, ja lähdimme tien päälle heti kukonlaulun aikaan. Ylitimme Atlas-vuoret ja vierailimme Aït Benhaddoun autiossa linnoituskylässä, jossa on kuvattu kuuluisia sarjoja ja elokuvia, kuten Game of Thrones ja Babel. Matkamme jatkui Dades-laaksoon ja vaarallisen tuuliseen kanjoniin, jossa vietimme yön kylmässä pikkuhotellissa. Seuraavana päivänä ohitimme pieniä berbeerikyliä, jotka muistuttivat kuinka autiomaassakin voi todella olla elämää. Illalla saavuimme viimein Saharaan, jonka dyynien juurilla yöpyminen oli ehdottomasti koko reissun kohokohta!

During our last night in Morocco I gathered some courage and stepped into a traditional hammam, where a local lady scrubbed me from head to toe. Even though I was squeaky clean when arriving back in the Netherlands, I could still find Sahara sand in my shoes, in my pockets, and even in my suitcase.

A week was not enough to explore Morocco, but we did see and experience a lot. We were very surprised how much Morocco has to offer. It means we must go back some day. Until then, I will share our wonderful experiences in my blog. Stories to come soon…

Matkamme viimeisenä iltana uskaltauduin perinteiseen hammamiin, jossa paikallinen nainen pesi minut päästä varpaisiin, kuuraten samalla kaikki Saharasta kantautuneet hiekanjyväset ja Marrakechin pölyt pois kehostani. Puhtauden tunteesta huolimatta onnistuin täällä sateisessa Hollannissa kuitenkin löytämään Saharan hiekkaa kengistäni, taskuistani, ja jopa matkalaukkuni pohjalta!

Vaikka ehdimme nähdä ja kokea retkemme aikana paljon, olisimme mielellämme viettäneet vielä toisenkin viikon Marokossa. Maan monipuolisuus todella yllätti meidät. Muistoja ja matkatarinoita riittää onneksi taas pitkäksi aikaa –  pidän huolen, että näitä kertomuksia tulee myös pian blogiini!

Post on the go: Off to Marrakech!

Two days ago I decided to look at cheap flights, just for fun, and ended up buying tickets to Marrakech, Morocco. I’m actually at the airport as I’m writing this post! It’s all very last minute, but that just makes the one-week trip even more exciting. My boyfriend is traveling with me, so it should definitely be a fun exploration in a new country!

We are looking forward to getting lost in the old city of Marrakech and sleeping in a local Riad. Hopefully we will also manage to visit the Sahara desert or spend a day at the Atlas Mountains. We didn’t have much time to plan this trip, so our expectations aren’t very high. At least we will not be disappointed!

// Moikka! Olen juuri Schipholin lentokentällä, sillä ostin torstaina lennot Marrakechiin! Viime tipassa, tiedän, mutta halpaa lentotarjousta ei vain voinut ohittaa. Aijomme yhdessä poikaystäväni kanssa viettää Marokossa viikon, jonka aikana saamme tutustua meille kokonaan uuteen maahan.

Marrakechiltä odotan erityisesti katutaiteilijoiden näkemistä ja mystisestä tunnelmasta nauttimista. Aijomme yöpyä paikallisessa riadissa, joka on varmasti hauska kokemus. Myös Hammam-tyylinen kylpylä on koettavien asioiden listalla. Jos ylimääräistä aikaa jää, matkaamme ehkä Saharan aavikolle tai Atlas-vuorille. Emme ole tosiaan paljoa ehtineet suunnitella tätä matkaa, joten aijomme tutkia paikkoja ihan fiiliksen mukaan. Emmepähän ole muodostaneet mitään korkeita odotuksia, joten tuskin ainakaan petymme kohteeseen.

Pyrin aina mahdollisuuden tullen päivittämään Instagramia, josta minut löytää nimimerkillä Annakilj. Sitten vain heipparallaa ja laukku hihnalle!

Feel the Finnish Lapland

Imagine a place steeped in mysticism, wilderness, snow covered forests and beautiful frozen lakes.

Up in the north of Finland, where the sun does not rise for some weeks during winter, the days are blue. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of the sun, far away in the distance, but it’s difficult to recognize whether it’s dawn or dusk.

With winter temperatures ranging from a comfortable zero to a freezing -35celsius, Lapland may sound like an extreme travel destination. But don’t be suspicious; if you wear warm, layered winter clothes you can definitely take the cold and enjoy winter activities in the beautiful white landscapes of the Arctic Circle.

Head out to the frozen lakes for some ice fishing, cross-country skiing or skating. When driving a snowmobile you can enter terrain that is inaccessible in the summer and dash across the frozen, snow covered lakes with a speed of 130km / hour. (Just don’t forget to wear a helmet!)

Hike in the snow to the top of a fell to enjoy the silence unlike anywhere else on earth. The only thing you will hear is the snow crunching under your winter boots. The breathtaking views will be worth every step taken. If you are lucky, you might spot wild reindeer or elk.

After a long day outside, enter the traditional Finnish (smoke) sauna and enjoy the peace and quiet while your muscles relax in the heat. If you have the courage, swim in an ice hole of a frozen lake, and once back on dry land, notice how your body starts to warm up as the blood circulation kicks in.

On cold nights with clear skies, remember to keep a watch for Aurora Borealis – nature’s spectacular show, which you can only see in the North. It is a view you will never forget, I promise.

In the snowy forests of Finland

Hello from Finland! We had a lovely white Christmas and very cold weather across the country. I spent the first week of my holiday here in the south of Finland, but tonight we’re taking the night train to Lapland! Fingers crossed that we will be able to spot some Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) up there in the Arctic Circle.

On Christmas day mum and I took a nice walk in the snowy woods. I love being surrounded by untouched snow and beautiful white trees. Even when my toes start to freeze.

Hei, ja hyvää joulua hieman myöhässä! Olen juuri Suomessa joululomalla perheeni luona. On ollut mahtavaa päästä saunomaan ja syömään kotimaisia jouluruokia! Kinkkua pursuaa jo korvista ulos.

Joulupäivänä teimme ätini kanssa pienen metsäretken ihan kotimme lähimaastossa. Mielestäni talvi on mahtava vuodenaika, etenkin kun saa olla lumen peittämien puiden ja auringossa kiiltävän, koskemattoman hangen ympäröimänä. Lumityöt ja puutuneet varpaat eivät niin haittaa, jos saa valkoisen joulun! Kunnon talvea on kieltämättä ollut Alankomaissa asustellessa vähän ikävä.

Tänä iltana matkustan täältä pääkaupunkiseudulta Lappiin. En ole tainnut koskaan olla Lapissa talvella, joten odotan innolla hieman erilaista lomakokemusta. Toivottavasti ainakin pääsisimme todistamaan revontulet!

Amsterdam Light Festival

Yesterday I visited the Amsterdam Light Festival, a fun annual event here in the Netherlands. In December it’s normally cold, windy and dark here, so what could brighten up the atmosphere better than some beautifully lit international art pieces! This year the festival runs from the 27th of November until January 18th.

During the Light Festival Amsterdam is complemented by light sculptures, projections and installations by contemporary artists. The theme for this year’s festival, ‘A Bright City’, challenged artists to create a tribute to Amsterdam’s city life. The artworks show a unique and modern way of seeing Amsterdam. You can choose to either take the Illuminade walk tour or enjoy a boat ride called Water Colors. Last night I decided to do both!

The boat route, Water Colors, took us past artworks along Amsterdam’s canals. It was lovely to sit in the warm boat with good company and discuss the modern light projections that we saw on the way. This year social media also played a big part of the festival – for example you could tweet about the art pieces and then be featured in them! However, I didn’t get my phone out for social media, as I didn’t really want to have my face reflected on a huge building :’)

The Illumade walk was also lovely, and it took us approximately 40minutes to go through the route. This is a nice way to explore Amsterdam’s more quiet areas. Luckily the light installations are all close to one another, so there’s no need to travel around the city to find them.

So, what was my favorite piece of art? During the Water Colors cruise we spotted a “Ghost Ship”, which has been built by using water jets and reflective lights. The ship was amazingly real, and it took some time for me to realize how it was possible to even build a projection like that.

Eilen suuntasin Amsterdamiin ihailemaan valofestivaalia, joka järjestetään Alankomaissa joka vuosi. Pimeänä, kylmänä ja tuulisena joulukuun sunnuntai-iltana valaistut taideteokset piristävät mieltä kummasti. Valofestivaali järjestetään tänä vuonna jo kolmatta kertaa, ja tapahtuma kestää tammikuun puoliväliin saakka.

Valofestivaalin aikana Amsterdamiin tuovat tunnelmaa kansainväliset nykytaideteokset, jotka ovat kaikki todella uniikkeja. Tänä vuonna tapahtuman teemana on Amsterdamin “kirkas kaupunki”, ja aihe on vahvasti läsnä kaikissa taideteoksissa. Näyttelyä voi ihailla veneristeilyn muodossa, tai Illuminade-kävelylle osallistumalla. Itse aloitin illan lepposalla, reilun tunnin mittaisella risteilyllä, jonka jälkeen kävelin vielä ihailemaan niitä teoksia, joita ei vedestä käsin päässyt näkemään. Illuminade-reitin selvittää alle neljässäkymmenessä minuutissa, jonka jälkeen onkin mukavaa levähtää tunnelmalliseen kahvilaan nauttimaan kaakaota, tai “Gluchweiniä” eli täkäläistä versiota glögistä.

Tänä vuonna myös sosiaalinen media sai roolin näyttelyssä. Kukin Twitteriin aiheesta postannut vierailija sai interaktiivisia reaktioita taideteoksilta. Itse en tällä kertaa kaivanut puhelinta taskustani, sillä en tuntenut erityistä tarvetta nähdä omaa pärstävärkkiä heijastettuna vilkkaan kävelykadun vieressä sijaitsevan rakennuksen seinään. (Se on kuitenkin hei mahdollista!)

Illan aikana ihastuin erityisesti kahteen valonäytökseen. Ensimmäinen oli vapautta edustava, sateenkaaren värein valaistu “kukkapelto” kanaalin varrella. Toinen oli vesisuihkujen ja valaistuksen yhteisefektinä muodostama “aavelaiva”, joka oli todella vaikuttava ja aidon tuntuinen näky pimeällä.

Jos siis Amsterdam kutsuu tammikuun alussa, niin suosittelen ehdottomasti valofestivaaliin tutustumista! Tapahtuman nettisivut löytää täältä. Ensi vuonna menen toivottavasti uudestaan!

The Dutch Sinterklaas Game

Last Friday, December 5th, was Sinterklaas day here in the Netherlands!

Sinterklaas is the Dutch version of our more familiar Santa Claus, but unlike our friend from the north, Sinterklaas actually travels to bring gifts all the way from Spain. Last year I was lucky enough to actually spot Sinterklaas here in Hilversum.  You can read more about my first Sinterklaas experience here.

This year I didn’t see him (maybe I’ve been too naughty), but instead we spent a nice Sinterklaas evening with some Dutch and international friends. We gathered at a colleague’s place to eat some traditional Dutch “Sinterklaas” cake, drink hot chocolate and to play a Sinterklaas game.

So how to play the Sinterklaas game then?

First of all, you need to bring two wrapped gifts, worth no more than five euros each, and place them in the gift pile. The game also requires a dice.

Players of the game gather around a table and start rolling the dice one by one. Each number that the dice shows has a meaning. For example, with number one you were allowed to pick a gift from the pile, but with number four you had to return it. The most hilarious rule of the game was when you were allowed to steal a gift from someone!

The game can have two different endings. Either you play as long as everyone gets two gifts, or you simply make a compromise and ask the players with most gifts to give some of theirs to the losers who had ended up with nothing.

After the game, it’s time to unwrap the gifts and thank Sinterklaas for a lovely evening!

I must admit that with an international group of people we actually bent some of the rules of the game. For example, in the Dutch version it is completely normal to unwrap the gifts during the game and fight for the best ones (and try to get rid of the gifts you don’t want). Somehow for us this directness was a bit too Dutch, so we decided to unwrap the presents at the end of the game.

Overall, I had a lovely Sinterklaas evening!

 

Perjantaina täällä juhlistettiin Sinterklaasia, Alankomaiden omaa versiota meidän ystävästämme joulupukista. Viime vuonna kirjoitin aiheesta ihan oman postauksen.

Tällä kertaa tuota legendaarista hahmoa ei tullut tavattua, mutta sen sijaan kokoonnuimme muutaman ystävän kanssa viettämään yhteistä Sinterklaas-iltaa. Pääsimme paitsi maistelemaan kotitekoisia hollantilaisia leivoksia, myös tutustumaan suosittuun Sinterklaas-peliin!

Pelin ohjeet ovat seuraavanlaiset:

1. Jokainen osallistuja tuo juhliin kaksi paketoitua lahjaa, yhteensä arvoltaan 10e. Lahjat asetellaan pelin alussa kauniiseen pinoon näytille.
2. Kun peli alkaa, kukin pelaaja heittää noppaa vuorollaan ja toimii sovittujen ohjeiden mukaan. Esimerkiksi luvulla yksi pelaaja sai hakea lahjapinosta itselleen paketin, mutta nelosen sattuessa pelaaja joutui ojentamaan lahjansa oikealla istuvalle pelaajalle. Luku numero kuusi oli ehkä pelin hauskin, sillä kutosen heittänyt pelaaja sai varastaa toiselta pelaajalta lahjan.
3. Peli päättyy vasta, kun jokaisella pelaajalla on sylissään kaksi lahjapakettia. Jos aika käy liian pitkäksi, on kompromissin paikka. Monta pakettia kahmineet pelaajat valitsevat mistä luopua, ja nämä ylimääräiset paketit sitten arvotaan ilman lahjoja jääneiden luusereiden kesken.
4. On aika avata lahjat, hurraa!

 

Pakko kyllä myöntää, että meidän sääntömme poikkesivat hieman paikallisten ”aidosta” versiosta. Todellisuudessa Sinterklaas-pelin paketit avataan jo pelin aikana. Tämä tietenkin mahdollistaa sen, että ei-toivotuista lahjoista pyritään pääsemään eroon, kun taas parhaimmista kilpaillaan hampaat irvessä. Meidän porukkamme oli sen verran kansainvälinen, että päätimme pitää lahjat yllätyksinä pelin loppuun saakka.

Ilta oli todella onnistunut, ja nyt minullakin on joulumieli kaikesta sateesta ja pimeydestä huolimatta!

Two countries I really want to visit

Just like every year, I have been bitten by the travel bug again. It’s cold in the Netherlands and the fact that I’ll spend my Christmas holiday in Finland is not really helping (but it’s nice to go home of course). By the end of February I hope to be traveling somewhere exotic again…

Every year, I try to visit a place I have wanted to see for some time already. Last year we spent three weeks in the rain forests of Borneo, and this year I finally got to explore Taiwan. Currently there are two destinations which I find extremely interesting. (I’m not necessarily planning to go to those places this winter, but definitely would like to see them sometime in the future.)

My top 5 dream destinations keep changing, but there’s one country which has stayed on the top of my list for eight years already. That’s Nepal! I would love to go trekking in the Himalayas and wake up to a mountain view every morning. Based on all the pictures shown on TV and the internet, the views have got to be amazing! If I had enough time, I would also try to stop by in Bhutan, which is still considered quite a remote place.

The second destination which I find interesting is Ethiopia. Ethiopia is supposed to offer great opportunities for trekking and visiting national parks. I would especially enjoy hiking in the highland areas and wouldn’t mind camping under the stars. I would also love to connect with the villages of ethnic groups in the Omo Valley. Traveling around Ethiopia would most likely not be easy, but it would surely be an unforgettable journey, especially for someone loves Africa as much as me.

While dreaming of escaping somewhere far away, I have bought a flight ticket to Lübeck, Germany. Actually, I’m leaving tomorrow! 

MATKAKUUMEESSA!

Olen selannut halpoja lomamatkoja jo lähes kuukauden päivät, mutta mitään ei ole vielä tullut päätettyä.. Tarve olisi kuitenkin päästä taas maailmalle, ehkä sitten alkukeväästä.

Pyrin joka vuosi matkustamaan sellaiseen paikkaan, jonne reissaamisesta olen unelmoinut jo jonkin aikaa. Viime vuonna matkakohteeksi valikoitui Borneo, tänä vuonna Taiwan. Mielenkiintoisia maita riittäisi vaikka loputtomiin, mutta tällä hetkellä olen innostunut kahdesta kohteesta ylitse muiden.

Jos minulta kysyy TOP 5 unelmieni matkakohteita, saattaisin tänään luetella eri maat kuin eilen. Nepal, tarkemmin vielä maan vuoristoseutu, on kuitenkin pysynyt listani ykkösenä jo lähes kahdeksan vuotta. Himalajalla vaeltaminen on jo pitkään ollut haaveissani, ja raikkaassa vuoristoilmassa mielikin varmasti lepäisi matkan fyysisestä rankkuudesta huolimatta. Jo pelkästään valokuvissa Nepalin jylhät maisemat ovat mykistävän kauniit, joten paikan päällä näkymien on oltava jotain vieläkin vaikuttavempaa!

Toinen minua kiinnostava kohde on Etiopia, jonka ylängöistä näin pari vuotta sitten luontodokumentin. Ihastuin televisioruudussa vilkkuviin maisemiin välittömästi. Tutkittuani hieman tarkemmin aihetta huomasin, että kyseessä on nouseva matkakohde erityisesti vaeltajien keskuudessa. Leiriyö Afrikan tähtitaivaan alla olisi jo itsessään lentolippujen varaamisen arvoista. Toinen Etiopiassa minua kiehtova asia on Omo-laakso, josta ihmisen uskotaan lähteneen (ensimmäisen pystyasennossa kävelleen ihmisen luuranko löytyi sieltä). Vielä tänäkin päivänä Omo-laaksossa elää lukuisia eristyneitä heimoja, joten siellä kulkeminen olisi tällaiselle ikuiselle Afrikkafanille taatusti unohtumaton kokemus! Mikään helppo nakkihan Etiopiassa matkustelu tuskin olisi, mutta varmasti kaiken vaivan arvoista.

Vaikken vielä ensi keväänä onnistuisi kumpaankaan yllä mainituista kohteista matkustamaan, ne tulevat taatusti kummittelemaan mielessäni kunnes pääsen paikan päälle.

Pidempää reissua odotellessa matkakuumeen pahimpia oireita voi onneksi lievittää lyhyemmillä retkillä. Huomenna suuntaan Saksan Lyypekkiin pienelle viikonloppulomalle!

Olenko muuten jo maininnut kuinka mahtavaa Schipholin lentokentän lähellä asuminen on? Täältä Hollannista pääsee kohtuullisin hinnoin lähes minne vain (,mikä on aika kohtalokasta matkakuumeesta kärsiville)!

 

Belgium: a Day in Bruges

When visiting Belgium I decided to take a day trip to Bruges, which is the capital in the Flemish Region of Belgium. The old city center of Bruges is one of the World Heritage sites of UNESCO: the streets, gardens, towers, canals, churches, restaurants, and stone buildings were all very pretty. It almost felt like we were not exploring a town, but in a romantic open-air museum!

Even by Belgian standards the weather in Bruges is often quite bad, but we were very lucky as it was a hot and sunny day. We didn’t really have a plan of what to do in Brugges, so we mainly enjoyed walking next to the canals and exploring the city center. The great thing about Bruges is that you can take one wrong turn and find something amazing, like a small garden with wooden benches and statues.

I can recommend climbing to the top of the Belfort-tower to enjoy the view of the town from above. After some climbing exercise it’s nice to find a little restaurant and enjoy some tasty seafood with local beer, followed by waffles of course! For friends of chocolate Bruges is a little paradise as there are chocolate shops behind every corner!

At the end of the hot and sunny day, a local band came out to one of the old town squares to play music. Locals were dancing and everyone seemed to really enjoy the atmosphere. I would have loved to stay in Bruges for another day, but it was time to take the train to Antwerp. Maybe I will visit Bruges again some day.

You can easily take the train to Bruges from Antwerp or Brussels. The climate in Bruges is quite mild so you can visit the town any time of the year. Bruges is also known for its Christmas markets!

Matkailijoiden keskuudessa olen usein kuullut puhuttavan Brugge-nimisestä kaupungista Belgiassa, ja positiivisten kertomusten myötä päätin tehdä sinne päiväretken Belgiassa vieraillessani.

Jo kapunkiin saapuessani huomasin kuinka Bruggen pienet kivitalot ja siistit kujat muodostivat todella kotoisan ja aidon belgialaisen tunnelman. Kaupungin hyvin säilynyt keskiaikais-tyylinen keskusta kuuluu UNESCON maailmanperintokohdelistalle, ja houkuttelee siksi melko paljon matkailijoita. Kanaaleineen ja patsaineen Brugge muistuttaa melkein enemmän romanttista ulkoilmamuseota, kuin tavallista arkea elävää pikkukaupunkia!

Vanhassa kaupungissa suosittelen kiipeämään keskustan Belfort-nimiseen kellotorniin. Belgialaiset kivitalot vinoine kattoineen näyttävät yläilmoista katsottuna aivan nukkekodeilta. Hikisen kiipeilyreissun jälkeen voi istahtaa yhteen kaupungin lukuisista ravintoloista nauttimaan tasokasta meriruokaa, ja jälkiruuaksi kuuluu tietenkin tilata belgialaisia vohveleita! Herkkusuille Bruggesta löytyy paljon persoonallisia suklaapuoteja, jotka toimivat oivana paikkana tuliaisten hankkimiselle. Suklaan lisäksi Bruggesta tuodaan maailmalle paljon pitsisiä käsitöitä, joita kaupungissa myydään lähes joka nurkan takana…

Bruggessa tunnelma on kohdillaan. Muistelen vieläkin hyvillä mielin kuinka kuuman kesäpäivän muuttuessa illaksi yhdelle vanhan kaupungin aukoista ilmaantui livebändi, jonka soiton tahtiin paikalliset tanssivat yhdessä. Itse istuin kanaalin viertä kulkevalle muurille nautiskelemaan viimeisistä auringonsäteistä ja ihastelemaan menoa. Silloin päätin, Bruggeen on ehdottomasti palattava vielä uudelleen.

Bruggeen pääsee junalla Antwerpenistä tai Brysselistä alle 1,5 tunnissa. Leudon ilmaston ansiosta tämä tunnelmallinen kaupunki sopii matkakohteeksi vuoden ympäri!

 

The Finnish Countryside

I just got back from a 10-day holiday in Finland. The first couple of days we spent at home, but the weather was so hot that we decided to rent a log cottage/cabin from the countryside of Orivesi. The cabin (like most summer cottages) was in the woods, next to a huge lake. We mainly spent our days swimming, lying on the jetty reading and enjoying the heat (which is not always that common in Finland in August).

Life at a Finnish summer cottage normally includes swimming, fishing, grilling and of course relaxing in the sauna. We also went for small walks in the woods. Many tourists who come to Finland only visit Helsinki, but there is so much more to see than the capital (which is not even very big). I think everyone should at least once experience a relaxing holiday in the woods of Finland!

After having spent a few days at the cottage I took the train to Iisalmi where my farther currently lives. We had lunch in a lovely restaurant next to a huge lake and then explored the village where my dad lived as a kid. We also went to a local open-air summer theatre which was lots of fun. Did you know that the world’s smallest restaurant is located in Iisalmi? Only two people at a time can eat there.

Overall, my holiday in Finland was extremely relaxing. I mastered the art of doing nothing and enjoyed the quietness and the sounds of nature. There was no need for technology at all!

Now I’m back in the Netherlands, already looking forward to my next visit to Finland (most likely for X-mas).

Palasin juuri Suomesta kymmenen päivän mittaiselta lomalta. Vietin kotona pääkaupunkiseudulla ainoastaan ensimmäiset pari päivää, jonka jälkeen suuntasimme Englannista saapuneiden sukulaistemme kanssa mökkeilemään Orivedelle.

Mökkeillessä tunsin pitkästä aikaa oikeasti rentoutuvani  – laiturilla kirjan kanssa loikoilu lämpimänä kesäpäivänä on ehkä mukavinta puuhaa ikinä! Teknologiasta on niin vaikeaa päästä välillä eroon, että muutaman päivän totaalinen irtautuminen luontoon teki hyvää. Valmistimme muurinpohjalettuja, grillasimme, soutelimme järvellä, kävimme keskiyöllä kuutamouinnilla ja peseydyimme rantasaunassa. Lisäksi ehdin lenkkeillä luonnossa ja nauttia raikkaasta metsän tuoksusta.

Mökkiviikon jälkeen matkasin junalla Iisalmeen vierailemaan isäni luona. Söimme muikkuja rantaravintolassa, joimme itse tehtyä mehua tuttavaperheen luona ja naureskelimme kesäteatterin hupaisalle esitykselle, jonka pääkertojana toimi elävä sika. En koskaan tiennyt, että maailman pienin ravintola sijaitsee Iisalmessa. Ohi on myös mennyt sekin fakta, että Olvi on Iisalmesta. Ilmeisesti joka päivä on koulupäivä.

Mahtavan sään ansiosta olisin mielelläni jäänyt Suomen maaseudulle vähän pidemmäksikin aikaa. Nyt olen tosiaan taas täällä Alankomaissa, sillä sain uuden työsopimuksen. Rentouttavan loman jälkeen jaksaa kuitenkin taas porskuttaa arjessa eteenpäin, ja huonoina hetkinä voi vaikka kaivaa hätävarastosta esiin vähän Fazerin Sinistä ja Salmiakkia!
