Today is a special day in the Netherlands! It’s St. Nicholas Eve, the day when the Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas by spending time with family and exchanging gifts. Sinterklaas (coming from Saint Nicholas) is a traditional winter holiday figure in the Low Countries, just like Santa Claus for us Finns. He has a white beard, a horse and a massive hat of a bishop.
Of course Sinterklaas also has a helper, Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) who is a black adolescent guy, dressed in a page uniform. According to some stories Zwarte Piet was an Ethiopian slave saved by Sinterklaas. In some Dutch songs Zwarte Piet is the person who puts naughty children in a bag and carries them away! Every year the Dutch media raises a massive racism discussion related to Zwarte Piet. Nowadays parents tell their children that Zwarte Piet turned black when he visited the families ‘chimneys.
Dutch kids traditionally place their wooden clogs in front of the fireplace with some sugar and carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse. Later on the kids will find presents close to the shoes! Wouldn’t it be fun to be a Dutch child today? Then again, maybe not. You might end up in a bag and get taken away!
Funny fact: Christmas Eve is a normal working day in the Netherlands.

Alankomaissa on tänään erikoinen päivä. Samaan aikaan kun Suomessa vietetään itsenäisyyspäivää, Hollannissa juhlitaan pyhän Nikolaoksen juhlaa. Aattona (eli tänään) pyhästä Nikolaoksesta pohjautunut Sinterklaas-hahmo saapuu tuomaan paikallisille lapsille lahjoja. Hahmo on hollantilaisille kuin joulupukki meille suomalaisille. Sinterklaasilla on myös Zwarte-piet niminen apulainen, musta mies, joka on kertomuksien mukaan Sinterklaasin pelastama siirtomaa-aikainen orja.
Vanhan perinteen mukaan Sinterklaas tuo lahjoja, kun taas Zwarte Piet (suomeksi Musta Pekka) sulloo tuhmat lapset säkkiin ja kuskaa heidät pois. Nykyään kuitenkin musta apulainen taitaa herättää vähän positiivisempia reaktioita paikallisten keskuudessa, koska hahmoa on yritetty muuttaa modernimmaksi. Arvatenkin joka vuosi Alankomaissa puhkeaa kova rasismiin liittyvä keskustelu, joka viittaa Zwarte Pietin taustaan. Vanhemmilla on täällä tapana sanoa lapsilleen, että heppu muuttui mustaksi laskeutuessaan savupiipusta.
Perinteisenä tapana täällä on tunkea lahjat kätevästi puukenkiin! Ensin lapset jättävät kenkiin Sinterklaasin valkoiselle hevoselle sokeria ja porkkanaa, ja seuraavaan iltaan mennessä kenkien sisälle/ympärille ilmestyy lahjoja – hurraa!
Kansallinen vapaapäivä tässä ei ole kyseessä, mutta ainakin meidän toimistosta sai lähteä tänään jo keskipäivällä kotiin Sinterklaasin kunniaksi. (Ja tietenkin mulla oli kokous klo 16.30-17.30!)Jouluaatto on Alankomaissa aivan normaali työpäivä, kun taas joulupäivänä vietetään juhlallisesti vapaata. Hieman erilaista meininkiä siis täällä päin Eurooppaa.
Otin yllä esiintyvät kuvat Sinterklaas-kulkueesta, joka sattui menemään kotini ohitse. Hilversumin lapset eivät oikein lämmenneet Zwarte Pietille, mutta Sinterklaas sai lämpimän vastaanoton. Olisi kiva olla hollantilainen penska tänään! :D

I haven’t heard of this tradition. Good thing or I would have been terrified of being put in a bag. I love that put carrots out for the horses. That’s thoughtful. Thanks for sharing!
It’s a funny tradition! The local kids weren’t very keen about Zwarte Piet, but Sinterklaas is everyone’s favorite.
